2024 Initial Mayor’s Court Education Courses

The Ohio Municipal League will be conducting Initial Mayor’s Court Training January 11-12, 2024. The 6-hour GENERAL session, for offenses other than alcohol and drug related traffic offenses, will be held January 11. The 6-hour OVI session, for alcohol and drug related traffic offenses, will be held January12.

Cost: $250 per Course  ~ OML Members    $350 per Course  ~ Non-Members

 Course hours are 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. 
 
Everyone attending training must register.

The closest hotel is the Embassy Suites by Hilton Columbus Dublin -  located at 5100 Upper Metro Pl, Dublin, OH 43017.   (The hotel is 3.8 miles from the Ohio University Dublin Integrated Education Center.)

Those Who Did Not Take Their 2023 Update Courses MUST START over with the 6-Hour Initial Courses. 

Ohio law requires that each mayor of a municipal corporation who is authorized to conduct a mayor’s court pursuant to Chapter 1905 of the Ohio Revised Code and who wishes to exercise the jurisdiction and authority granted pursuant to Chapter 1905, O.R.C. receive Supreme Court approved training.                     

The Ohio Municipal League has been certified by the Ohio Supreme Court to conduct the required classroom instruction.  Each person who successfully completes an accredited education program will receive a certificate attesting to the satisfactory completion of the study course.  The Ohio Municipal League maintains a record of all the individuals who attended the League's accredited education programs; however, it is the responsibility of each individual to know what courses they need to take each year.                                                   

A newly elected or newly appointed mayor who wishes to conduct a mayor’s court and prosecute first offense OVI cases, and all other non-alcohol and drug related traffic offenses that may come before mayors shall obtain, within sixty days of first assuming office, six hours of classroom training in order to hear cases other than alcohol and drug related traffic offenses (GENERAL) and a separate six hours of classroom instruction related to alcohol and drug related traffic offenses (OVI).  Completion of the two six-hour training requirements authorizes the mayor to hear cases through the 31st day of December of the year immediately following the year in which the education was completed.  Following the six-hour initial training requirements, the mayor shall receive each year, three hours of continuing education for OVI cases, and an additional three hours of continuing education in order to prosecute all other cases that may come before mayor’s court.  A mayor who decides not to hear first offense OVI cases is only required to take the initial six-hour classroom instruction for all of the non-OVI cases (GENERAL) which may come before the court.  The annual three-hour non-OVI continuing education is also required each year after the initial training has been completed.

Magistrate- (a licensed attorney who has practiced for the past 3 years in Ohio) must have this initial training before hearing court cases (per the Ohio Supreme Court).
